The Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area was included in the World Heritage List in 1982 on the basis of 4 natural criteria and 3 cultural ones (more than any other World Heritage aera in the world.

The area is now 1.4 million hectares, which represents about 20% of the island of Tasmania.
