Information about Tasmania >  Weather in Tasmania

The weather in Tasmania can change very quickly and all seasons can happen in one day... so be prepared if you go for a bushwalk.

Maximum average in summer is 22c and in winter 12c. Nights are always on the cool side and it is a good idea to carry a rain/wind jacket and hat with you at all times, espcially if you go bushwalking, even for short walk.

With the growing number of tourists visiting Tasmania, it is important to make people aware that the Tasmanian weather can change so quickly and can become a challenge if you are caught in the outdoors unprepared.

A few guidelines if you go for a bushwalk (even a short one):

  • always have a rain jacket with you... if a front comes through it will give you some protection even if it is only from the wind
  • check the weather forecast often
    - Bureau of Meteorology www.bom.gov.au/tas/forecasts/map7day.shtml
    - MetEye to check for wind forecst in particular www.bom.gov.au/australia/meteye/

Snow in Hobart

Snow is rare, especially near the coast but it can happen, even in summer.

If you plan any visit to exposed areas of Tasmania, be aware that the weather can change very quickly.

Hobart woke up to a good covering of snow on August 03, 2015. Most schools and many roads were closed. The excitement was palpable as young and old made the most of it with snow men, giant snow balls and of course snow fights !

Last night I ventured out with my good mate Kyle Rodgers, we went to this location in hope the Aurora would put on a nice display as we had been planning to shoot here for quite some time!

The weather was almost perfect, no breeze, the moon had enough strength to light the foreground, and lucky enough to not smother the Aurora!

It was an amazing sight for a small time, as soon as it peaked....it was gone in a matter of minutes!

Thanks again for sharing this location with me Kyle, was a night I will not forget in a long time!
