The platypus is a strange animal found only in eastern Australia, including Tasmania.

  • egg-laying mammal (monotreme)
  • detect electric fields and sense water movements to hunt prey
  • eat freshwater invertebrates, larvae and small fish
  • platypuses don't have teeth but grind their preys using 2 keratin plates in their mouth
  • tail used for fat storage
  • Tasmania is home to the biggest specimen

  • Mt Field
  • Deloraine
